The unveiling ceremony at the old Peathill Kirkyard near Rosehearty
of the restored gravestone of Rev. William Mercer and his wife Anne Munro.
He was the minister of the parish of Pitsligo from 1720 until 1762.
Their son, Hugh Mercer
fled to America after the 1745 uprising and
became a general in the American Revolutionary Army.
He died of his wounds in 1777 following the Battle of Princeton.
Over 30,000 people attended his funeral.
The gravestone was restored in 2011 by the Pitsligo Castle Trust,
Friends of Pitsligo Castle and the Forbes Lodge of Freemasons, Number 67.
Ms Dana Linnet, Consul for the United States of America in Scotland
was introduced to the meeting by Ross Herald Charles Burnett, and she said that Hugh Mercer
was very well known in the United States,
as well as towns and streets, named after him.
Major Mike Taitt is the Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire.
Also present at the ceremony were MSP Stewart Stevenson and local councillors.
